What is the biggest challenge facing leaders today?
Our business is centered on people. The majority of Liz and my time is spent finding, training, and serving our staff. Over half of our staff was referred to me by our more tenured employees. Building a culture of integrity and mutual respect takes tremendous energy and focus. Leadership is easier, though, when you are leading great people.
Who is your mentor? Why and how did this person impact your life?
Many people have helped and guided us. The business owners I most respect, though, tend to be unassuming and private people. The combination of humility and integrity is why I sought them out.
What is your biggest fear?
We started the business to change our lifestyle and serve the community. Business ownership is stressful and time-consuming, though. My biggest fear is while growing the business, we will have less time and energy for our family, friends, and community work.
What advice would you give to yourself five years ago?
Serve others. Give your time and talents to people, not projects or goals. If your biggest goal is to retire early, to stop working, you need to change your perspective.
